Papyrus is a local-first iPhone app for keeping a personal library. These terms are the agreement between you and Papyrus for using the app and its home-screen widget.
In plain terms: Papyrus is provided as-is for your personal use. Your library stays on your device, you own what you put into it, and you agree to use the app lawfully. We can't guarantee book data from third parties is always correct, and we're not liable for indirect losses. If you disagree with these terms, please don't use the app.
1. Accepting these terms
By downloading, installing, or using Papyrus ("the app"), you agree to these Terms of Service (the "Terms"). If you're using Papyrus on behalf of someone else, you confirm you're authorized to accept these Terms for them. If you don't agree, don't install or use the app.
These Terms work alongside our Privacy Policy, which explains how Papyrus handles your data.
2. Your license to use Papyrus
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use Papyrus on Apple devices that you own or control, for your own personal, non-commercial use, in accordance with these Terms and the App Store's rules.
You agree not to:
- Copy, sell, sublicense, rent, or redistribute the app;
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code, except where that restriction is prohibited by law;
- Remove or alter any proprietary notices; or
- Use the app in any way that violates these Terms or applicable law.
Papyrus, its name, design, artwork, and software are owned by us and protected by intellectual-property laws. These Terms don't transfer any ownership to you.
3. Your content
"Your content" means the information you add to Papyrus — the books, ratings, dates, notes, preferences, and imported files. You own your content. Because Papyrus stores everything locally on your device, we don't access, host, or claim any rights to it.
You're responsible for your content and for keeping your own backups. If you delete the app, your library is deleted with it, and we have no server-side copy to restore.
4. Acceptable use
You agree to use Papyrus only for lawful purposes. You agree not to use the app to:
- Break any law or infringe anyone's rights, including intellectual-property rights;
- Interfere with, disrupt, or place an unreasonable load on the third-party services Papyrus relies on (such as Open Library); or
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to any system, network, or data.
5. Third-party services & data
Papyrus retrieves public book information and cover images from Open Library, a free catalog operated by the Internet Archive. It can also import files you export from Goodreads or StoryGraph.
These are independent services we don't control. Book details, cover images, page counts, and similar data are provided by them and may be incomplete, inaccurate, or unavailable at times. Papyrus makes no guarantee about the accuracy of third-party data, and your use of those services may be subject to their own terms. Goodreads, StoryGraph, Open Library, Apple, and other names are trademarks of their respective owners; Papyrus is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by them.
6. App Store terms
If you obtained Papyrus through the Apple App Store, you acknowledge that these Terms are between you and us, not Apple, and that Apple is not responsible for the app or its content. Apple has no obligation to provide support or maintenance for the app. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you. Your use of the app must also comply with the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions.
7. Disclaimer of warranties
Papyrus is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don't warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or that any book data will be accurate or complete. You use the app at your own discretion and risk.
8. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we won't be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, arising from your use of — or inability to use — Papyrus. Because Papyrus stores your library only on your device, you are responsible for maintaining backups of anything important to you.
Some jurisdictions don't allow certain limitations, so some of the above may not apply to you. In that case, our liability is limited to the smallest amount permitted by law.
9. Changes to the app & these terms
We may update, change, or discontinue features of Papyrus over time. We may also revise these Terms; when we do, we'll update the "Last updated" date above. Continuing to use the app after changes take effect means you accept the revised Terms. If you don't agree with a change, stop using the app.
10. Termination
You can end this agreement at any time by deleting the app from your device. Your license ends automatically if you breach these Terms. Sections that by their nature should survive termination — including ownership, disclaimers, and limitation of liability — will continue to apply.
11. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws applicable at our principal place of operation, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, except where mandatory local consumer-protection laws give you additional rights. Nothing in these Terms limits any statutory rights you have as a consumer that cannot be waived by agreement.
